Preventing Parasitic Diseases in Pets

Preventing Parasitic Diseases in Pets
By Randy Jones

Internal and external parasites are responsible for the vast majority of illnesses and disorders seen in dogs. The common dog flea is the number one health problem facing these pets. Chewing and scratching are the common signs of a flea allergy caused when a dog is bitten by a flea and the allergy develops and continues even after the fleas are long gone. Fleas are also disease carriers and can threaten the dogs health as well.

If youve tried all the powders, sprays, and shampoos, you might want to get a more dedicated treatment. The three products most used by Veterinarians are Program, Advantage, and Frontline. The really great thing about all three products is that each is dedicated to one purpose, elimination fleas, and you only need to use them once a month.

The oldest of these medications is Program. It is an oral drug that affects only the flea, not your pet. It works by sterilizing the flea so that no more young are produced. Since flea larvae make up over 50% of the flea population, this is very effective at breaking the flea life cycle. After 60 to 90 days, (2-3 treatments), Program will reach its maximum effectiveness, and will only need one treatment each month thereafter to maintain.

Advantage and Frontline are topical products that are placed on the skin between your pets shoulder blades. They then spread over you pets body and will paralyze and then kill any flea coming in contact with the product. These flea products are especially useful for those pets that are flea allergic, as the flea doesnt have to bite to be eliminated.

Advantage eliminates fleas within 12 hours after contact, before they lay eggs to prevent re-infestation. It has a waterproof formula that wont wash off and continues working even when the dog gets wet. Frontline comes in 2 forms, regular Frontline, and Frontline Plus. Both Frontline formulas are waterproof, but have the added benefit of eliminating ticks as well. While regular Frontline kills both fleas and ticks for up to 1 month, Frontline Plus continues to kill fleas for up to 3 months.

All the products mentioned are safe for your pet and have been used by Veterinarians for many years. In addition, Program can be used along with either of the topicals for complete protection. Most Veterinarians recommend Program for year round use, and then add Advantage or Frontline during the worst of the flea season (April to October).

Preventing Common Diseases: Osteoporosis

Preventing Common Diseases: Osteoporosis
By Chris Theberge

What disease are college-aged individuals most concerned about? If you ask most, I doubt you will hear many people respond with osteoporosis. This disease, which mainly affects older individuals, relates to a weakening and thinning of bones due to a loss in calcium stores. Why should you be concerned if osteoporosis is a disease the effects mainly individuals over 50-years-old?

According to the National Institute of Health on Osteoporosis and Bone Related Disorders, in the U.S. today 10 million people are living with osteoporosis and another 18 million are at high risk due to low bone mass. Approximately one in every two women and one in every eight men will have an osteoporosis related fracture at some point in their life. Men are less susceptible to developing osteoporosis because they generally have larger bones and achieve greater peak bone mass than women. Women also lose more bone mass as a result of hormonal changes associated with menopause. Family history of osteoporosis increases ones risk of the disease and Caucasian and Asian women are more likely to develop osteoporosis compared to African-American and Hispanic women.

One of the most important ways to prevent osteoporosis is making sure that normal peak bone mass is achieved by about 20 years of age. Although peak bone mass is mainly attained during the third decade of life, the amount of bone formed during your 20s to 30s is relatively small.

Bones are constantly breaking down and reforming. These two processes parallel each other until approximately 30 years of age when natural bone loss begins. Therefore, bones become progressively weaker and less dense as you age. Bone loss through aging is inevitable; however there are several ways to alleviate the rate at which this occurs. Many decisions you make now will determine your osteoporosis risk later in life. Current nutrition and exercise habits are two dynamics you must pay close attention to.

Preventing osteoporosis through nutrition

Studies have shown that teenage girls, adult women, and adults over 65 years of age have calcium intakes below the RDA. Why is this a concern?

About 99 percent of your body's calcium is found in teeth and bones. Adequate calcium consumption is crucial to ensure that your bones have enough of the building blocks for formation. Also, calcium levels in the blood are under tight control, which aims to maintain a steady calcium level. When calcium levels are low, with inadequate intake for example, your bones will release calcium to maintain that steady state. If calcium intake is consistently low, then your bones must continuously give up their calcium, instead of using it for its own development, resulting in lower bone mineral content, and hence lower density. Depending on your age, average calcium consumption should be between 1000 mg-1300 mg each day. Calcium supplementation is rarely warranted because it is very easy to meet your daily requirements with food.

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that is needed in adequate amounts to ensure that calcium is absorbed. There are two ways in which we get the vitamin. First, the sun can provide a way of processing the vitamin on the skin, which is followed by absorption into the body. Secondly, dietary intake can come from fortified milk, cod liver oil, and egg yolks, although in small amounts. Considering the region that we live in, conversion of vitamin D from the sun is not enough to provide adequate amounts, therefore dietary intake is needed. Interestingly, the major source of vitamin D in the American diet is from milk. Milk is also the major contributor of calcium. Therefore, it is to no surprise that inadequate calcium intake will also lead to inadequate vitamin D intakes. It is recommended that individuals receive about 400 IU - 800 IU of vitamin D each day through the diet.

Adequate calcium and vitamin D intake is easily achieved by drinking at least three glasses of milk, preferably skim, each day. Dairy products in general are excellent calcium foods, yet they are not the only way to meet your daily requirements. Canned fish products such as sardines provide ample amounts of calcium. Green leafy vegetables (i.e. Collard greens) are also calcium containing foods; however the presence of phytates and oxalates bind to calcium and limit the amount that is absorbed. Fortification of soy products, orange juice and cereals with calcium will greatly improve the calcium status of consumers.

Vitamin K is another fat-soluble vitamin necessary for normal bone health. One of its major functions is to aid in the formation of osteocalcin, a contributor to bone formation. Studies have related low vitamin K intakes with increased risk for osteoporosis. Vitamin K is synthesized by intestinal bacteria, yet the rate at which it is absorbed is not enough to maintain necessary levels in the body. Therefore vitamin K must be consumed through the diet. Dark green leafy vegetables, liver, alfalfa and kelp are all excellent sources.

High intakes of animal protein or sodium can increase the amount of calcium lost in the urine. Studies have related vegetarian diets with reduced urinary calcium loss compared to diets high in animal protein. Sodium by itself has the potential to increase the amount of calcium lost in the urine. Since Americans tend to have high protein diets, lowering your intake or substituting meat with beans or tofu can help to spare calcium. Replacing soda with milk, and not adding salt to your foods will also help.

Preventing Osteoporosis through exercise

Regular exercise aids in bone formation by adding mechanical stress to the bone and greatly increasing the amount of minerals deposited over time. Bone development is most effective when the activity is medium to high impact. Some of the best exercises to strengthen your bones include: running, weight training, and stop and go sports such as basketball, soccer and field hockey. The constant pounding impact will increase bone density, and improve balance and agility lessening the risks of falls and fractures.

For women there are additional factors to keep in mind regarding exercise, sports, and osteoporosis. The female athlete triad is a condition that often occurs in young females involved in endurance and weight-control sports (dancing and gymnastics). The triad consists of amenorrhea, disordered eating, and osteoporosis which all lead to a lessening of bone density. Amenorrhea occurs in female athletes when the menstrual cycle ceases because hormones become highly imbalanced. The imbalance often takes place when extreme exercise regimens and restricted calorie intake are present. Estrogen production is therefore reduced, and its important support in bone formation is lost. Disordered or irregular eating habits have a significant impact on bone density as well.

Many athletes feel stressed to maintain a certain figure to be competitive in their respective sport; but without adequate calories, nutrients, and minerals, bone deposition will not occur. When both of these conditions are present, density is greatly lowered and it is comparable to post-menopausal women. Risk of osteoporosis for these otherwise healthy athletes is increased.

Other Factors

In addition to exercise and nutrition other factors will influence how densely your bones form. Excessive use of drugs such as alcohol, caffeine and tobacco adversely affect bone deposition in many ways. Daily consumption of two to three ounces of hard alcohol or two to three beers per day may be damaging to the skeleton. Heavy drinkers have shown to have less dense bones and increased non-traumatic fractures then that of individuals who don't consume excess alcohol.

Caffeine, in high amounts, has the potential to impair calcium absorption, thereby reducing bone density over time. Although this may seem as a major problem, adding small amounts of milk to your coffee can offset this problem. This loss may also be accounted for because of excess caffeine in the diet and inadequate calcium.

Finally, smoking, in general, is bad for your body. In regard to osteoporosis, smoking inhibits calcium uptake to a degree, reduces the formation of new bone, and nicotine may have inhibitory effects on estrogen, which aids in bone formation in women. Moderate consumption, or in the case of smoking, abstaining all together from use is the best choice to aid in peak bone density formation.

Small and Large Dogs How Size Variations Can Help Us Learn More About Diseases We Share With Dogs

Small and Large Dogs- How Size Variations Can Help Us Learn More About Diseases We Share With Dogs
By Connie Ragen Green

Dogs are descended from wolves but the domestic dogs of today are quite different from the dogs of long ago. The largest variation in size of any animals that live on land is found among the various breeds of dogs. Because dogs and humans have more than 200 diseases in common and humans share about 85% of our genetic makeup with canines in general, it is important to study the variation of size found in dogs. There were probably smaller wolves in ancient times but we have no way of knowing for sure. These smaller canines would have been more likely to have been treated as pets by ancient men. This was the beginning of man wanting to breed smaller dogs for different uses, such as hunting, herding and watching for intruders.

The reason that we have dogs of such varying size is that breeders started using selective breeding hundreds of years ago. The smallest dogs from each litter were mated together, resulting in smaller and smaller dogs. Purebred dogs became less pure and finally the bloodlines were diluted to the point that the purest animals of each breed became almost extinct. It is for this reason that we are able to learn so much from the diseases we share in common with dogs. These diseases include cancer, high blood pressure and arthritis.

Small dogs have a mutation in one of their chromosomes that accounts for the growth sequence from birth to adolescence in mammals. By studying this gene and the hormone it controls we can put the pieces of the puzzle together in a way that was previously unknown.

By learning more about the similarities between humans and dogs we can find out new ways to treat and prevent many diseases that we have in common. This is just one more way that dogs are truly mans best friend.

What Are The Top Ten Dog Diseases?

What Are The Top Ten Dog Diseases?
By Robert Knechtel

Dog Diseases number in the scores, just as in humans. But, veterinarians tend to see some much more than others. Sadly, a great deal of grief could be avoided if more dog owners were careful to see that their pets are immunized regularly against preventable dog diseases.

While experts, as usual, may differ, what are the top ten dog diseases? Here's a list (not necessarily in order of seriousness) with a brief explanation of each disease:

Distemper:

Of all the dog diseases, the American Veterinary Medical Association considers the distemper virus to be the worst canine disease threat to dogs world wide. Distemper is fatal in 80% of puppies and 50% of adults. All dogs are extremely vulnerable, and should be vaccinated, with subsequent boosters in keeping the recommendation of a Veterinarian.

Parvovirus (Parvo):

Parvovirus is a worldwide dog disease. It is extremely contagious, especially among puppies, and can overwhelm a dog leading to death within 48 to 72 hours after exposure. Symptoms include depression, loss of appetite, vomiting and severe diarrhea. Parvo vaccination is essential with booster shots as recommended.

Rabies:

Rabies is a virus and becomes fatal when symptoms appear. Because rabies can be fatal to humans and other mammals, state and local laws uniformly require rabies vaccination, many mandating booster shots yearly.

Kennel Cough:

This is a respiratory disease especially prevalent in kennels and shelters. There are a variety of virus strains, including Bortadella. Symptoms can include a dry hacking cough along with inflammation of the larynx, bronchial tubes and trachea. Vaccination, as often as every six months is recommended.

Leptospirosis:

Symptoms of Leptospirosis include lethargy, kidney inflammation, low-grade fever, vomiting, reddening of the mucous membranes and conjunctiva, and blood clotting abnormalities. Since it is a bacterial disease, also found in humans, it is treated with antibiotics. Veterinarians are often reluctant to innoculate against this dog disease, since there is questionable effectiveness, and puppies can have adverse reactions.

Infectious canine hepatitis:

While this dog disease often manifests itself with mild symptoms such as a slight fever or slight lethargy, it can, in some instances become fatal. Recovery is usually rapid. Vaccination is recommended.

Lyme Disease:

Symptoms of Lyme Disease in dogs will include lethargy, joint pain, lack of appetite, lymph node enlargement, and fever. Lyme Disease is bacterial and is spread by ticks. Treatment is with tetracycline, an antibiotic. The available vaccine is not generally recommended.

Coronavirus:

Diarrhea and vomiting are symptomatic of this dog disease so it can be confused with parvovirus. Other indications are loss of appetite, smelly diarrhea, lethargy and dehydration. Replacement of lost fluids and control of vomiting and diarrhea are the recommended treatments. A vaccine is not generally recommended.

Obesity:

Just as in humans, this dog disease is a serious medical problem. Frequently, obese humans own obese dogs. Obviously, limiting food intake, withholding human food and enough exercise will contribute to a dogs longer life.

Heartworm:

Heartworms are parasites that grow and multiply, infesting the chambers in the heart, arteries in the lungs. Symptoms appear gradually, usually manifested in easy tiring, lethargy and a soft cough. If not treated, it eventually brings on death by congestive heart failure in a once active animal. Prevention with products such as HartGard is recommended.

Your veterinarian should give you a certificate showing your pet's immunization against the common dog diseases. Ask for a wallet sized card which you can carry with you.

Claiming Compensation For Asbestos Related Diseases

Claiming Compensation For Asbestos Related Diseases
By Andrew Bowen

Many people are affected by Asbestos related diseases throughout the UK. It is estimated that Asbestos affects as many as 1 in 100 men over the age of 40 in this Country as well as an increasing number of women. Exposure to Asbestos dust can damage the fibrous tissue in the lungs.

Claims can be made by Claimants, even though the exposure was 30 or more years ago, and the past employer(s) has gone out of business.

Claims can also be made for deceased Claimants on behalf of their loved ones/estate.

Successful secondary claims for Asbestos have been won by Widows of those exposed, after suffering lung damage merely from handling/washing clothes and overalls containing harmful asbestos fibres, and even Grandchildren have received compensation, after contracting lung conditions merely from sitting on Granddads knee when he was still wearing his work clothes.

The compensation obtained can, in many cases, amount to well in excess of 100,000 pounds, depending upon the severity of the particular disease.

Asbestos has no respect for socio-economic group or occupation. There are over 1,000 new cases of Mesothelioma reported every year in the UK. It is generally accepted asbestos is the cause.

The types of occupation where exposure can be found/occur include the following:-

  • Asbestos Cement Products Industry (used for strong, inexpensive building materials, eg tiles, corrugated roofing, gutters, water and drain pipes, chimneys etc.
  • Floor tiling industry
  • Insulation and Fire Proofing
  • Carpenters
  • Electricians
  • Power Plant Works
  • Plumbers
  • Roofers
  • Central Heating and/or air conditioning contractors
  • School and Hospital workers
  • Ship workers
Symptoms can include breathlessness and persistent coughing which may cause sleepless nights leading to fatigue. Some sufferers report chest pain and feeling as though a heavy weight is pressing down on their chest, depending upon the particular condition.

There are a number of state benefits available to victims and their carers. A specialist Solicitor can not only pursue asbestos compensation claims for sufferers on a true No Win No Fee* basis, but also provide advice and assistance with applications in order to maximise benefit entitlement.

Andrew Bowen is the Managing Director of CityView Media which operate a number of online businesses including National Injury Claims and Claim King Accident Compensation.

What Genetic Diseases Should Goldendoodle Breeders Be Testing For In The Parents?

What Genetic Diseases Should Goldendoodle Breeders Be Testing For In The Parents?
By Sherry Rupke

What genetic diseases should goldendoodle breeders be testing for in the parents?

Goldendoodles are such a popular breed that there are many careless breeders out there who are doing little to no testing. Please do your research and make sure breeders are performing the testing below. Its better to wait for a good quality pup from a great breeder then to support careless breeders who are just out to breed as many pups as possible without caring about the breed as a whole.

If you buy your golden doodle puppy from an unrepeatable breeder you may end up with many health problems and expensive vet bills.

The website www.goldendoodle-labradoodle.org has some of the top goldendoodle breeders in the world.

Tests required for Breeding of Golden Retrievers

1. Hips (HD) OFA or Pennhip or OVC

2. eyes (CERF) Required Yearly

3. Hearts......tested and certified by OFA

4. Elbows (OFA)

Elbows have become a recent problem in the breed. Due to this, you may find many of the older tested dogs will not have elbow clearances. In order to continue to keep up with the research and the recommendations of the breed Assoc. we will require elbows on all Golden Retrievers to be cleared on all new certifications. WE will not require elbows on the older certifications.

Tests required for the Breeding of Standard Poodles

1. Hips (HD) OFA or Pennhip or OVC

2. elbows OFA

3. Eyes (CERF) Required Yearly

4. Von Willebrands (vWd) (bleeding disorder) DNA or Blood screen

5. Sebaceous Adenitis (SA) Skin Disorder

* Thyroid malfunctions - Not Required but a highly recommended test for all breeding dogs.

Tests required for breeding of Miniature and Toy Poodles.

1. Hips for HD and Legg-Perves Disease OFA, Penn hip or OVC

2. Stifles for Luxating Patella's

3. Eyes (CERF) Required Yearly

4. Von Willebrands Disease (vWd) DNA or Blood screen

What You Can Catch From Your Pet Skin Diseases

What You Can Catch From Your Pet - Skin Diseases
By Matthew Homfray

Dogs, cats and small mammals such as rabbits or guinea pigs are popular companions for many people, often sharing their home environment. Being in such close contact, it is perhaps inevitable that sometimes disease is transmitted from pets to their owners. Though the diseases discussed in this article can affect any person, immunocompromised people such as infants, the elderly or those who are HIV+ need to be extra careful. This article looks at skin diseases of dogs and cats that can present a risk to their owners.

Actually, considering the large number of people interacting closely with small animals on a daily basis, the overall risk of contracting disease from a pet with skin disease is remarkably low. In general, keeping pets clean, free from parasites and healthy, as well as good personal and household hygiene such as proper hand washing, will minimize the risk of catching a disease from your pet. However, people belonging to risk categories (the immunosuppressed) need more specific advice.

The increase in pet travel, and the occurrence of breeders sourcing stock from overseas, has made the risk of exposure to new diseases a little greater. The most common skin diseases transmissible to humans that occur in dogs and cats are sarcoptic mange (scabies), cheyletiellosis (mite infestation), fleas and dermatophytosis (ringworm). In general, young and newly acquired animals, especially those from animal shelters, are most likely to be affected by these diseases. Below we look at each of these diseases more closely.

Flea Infestation

Since the reservoir of fleas is predominantly in the environment, and jump onto the human from there, one might argue that this is not strictly transmitted from the animal. However, it is introduced into the household by the animal and therefore falls into this category.

The flea will readily feed on humans and can cause a marked hypersensitivity reaction in some individuals. In addition, fleas can transmit other diseases, such as cat scratch disease (Bartonella henselae), tapeworm (Dipylidium caninum) and plague (Yersinia pestis). Regular flea control with veterinary recommended spot on treatments will keep the environmental population of fleas low, and minimize the risk of bites.

Sarcoptic Mange

This is caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, and can affect a number of species. Different strains of the mite do tend to prefer different species, and the most common one which affects dogs and foxes only has an estimated 20 per cent chance of transmission to humans. Prolonged skin to skin contact is the main route of transmission, with the disease presenting as an itchy rash with small red spots. Usually, disease in the human will clear up of its own accord, once the dog has been treated appropriately with a medicated shampoo or spot on drug. Occasionally, humans may need their own treatment though. It is very important to treat all in contact dogs as well. Unlike fleas, these mites do not tend to survive for long in the environment so reinfection is rare once the dog has been treated.

Cheyletiellosis

This can be caught from dogs, cats and small mammals such as rabbits or guinea pigs. Mites can survive in the environment for several days. Humans are only transiently infected, and develop itchy spots. Appropriate treatment of the affected animal, and the in contact animals, resolves the problem.

Dermatophytosis (Ringworm)

This is actually a type of fungus, not a worm as the name suggests. The most common type in dogs and cats is Microsporum canis. Transmission is often by direct contact, but spores can remain infective in the environment for many months. Dogs and cats may be carriers of the disease without showing any signs of it themselves, while acting as a source of infection for their owners.

In dogs and cats, infections with ringworm usually resolve by themselves given time, unless the animal is immunocompromised (e.g. on steroids). However, treatment is recommended so that the risk of transmission to humans is lessened. Dogs and cats are usually treated with a topical solution of itraconazole, while affected humans are usually prescribed an anti fungal cream to apply to affected areas.

Otodectic Mange (Ear Mites)

These mites cause ear infections in dogs, cats and ferrets. They can, rarely, affect skin outside of the ear, and this has been reported sometimes in humans. It is however rare, and easily controlled by treating the affected animal with a certain acaricidal spot on drug (e.g. selamectin, moxidectin) or topical ear drops.

Malassezia Dermatitis

These are yeasts often found on normal skin in dogs, cats, humans and other species. Skin disease occurs as a reaction to the yeasts overgrowth and the hosts reaction to it. Transmission to humans has only ever been documented in immunocompromised people, and the risk of infection is low.

Staphylococcal Infections

Staphylococcal pyoderma (bacterial skin infection) is common in dogs, but not in cats. It often occurs secondary to another disease and usually involves the bacterium Staphylococcus intermedius. Contrast this to humans, where the main cause of bacterial skin infection is Staphylococcus aureus, and it is clear that the risk of transmission to humans is very low.

Mycobacterial Infections

Tuberculosis poses a risk to human health. The bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium bovis can infect both cats and humans, and pass between them. The disease presents as nodules, draining tracts or non healing wounds, or as respiratory disease. Urgent medical and veterinary attention should be sought, though the incidence of pets passing it to their owners is very low.

Feline Poxvirus Infection

Cats get cowpox infections by being bitten by voles and wood mice. Hence it is only outdoor cats that are affected, namely those that hunt. Many affected cats do not show any signs of disease. Transmission to humans is rare, and can cause painful skin nodules.

What can immunocompromised people do to minimize the risk to them?

Firstly, a risk assessment should be carried out. Good communication is essential between the medical and veterinary professionals involved. The goal is to maintain disease free status in the pet, whilst practicing thorough hygiene measures by the person. Being immunocompromised does not mean you cannot have a pet, but the following points should be taken into consideration:

1. If acquiring a pet, make sure it is a healthy one, vet checked and not from a source rife with diseases.

2. Safe feeding practices

3. Avoid your pet coming into contact with contaminated material from other animals (e.g. feces)

4. Vaccination annually

5. Good worming control (every 3 months in adult dogs and cats)

6. Good flea prevention (usually monthly for spot ons)

7. Good dental care (brushing your pets teeth, dental chews to keep teeth clean)

8. Regular general health checks by your veterinarian

Dog Owners And Dog Daycares Take Notice The Top Six Diseases You Need To Watch For In Dogs!

Dog Owners And Dog Daycares Take Notice - The Top Six Diseases You Need To Watch For In Dogs!
By Jeremy S. Martin

As a dog owner, or dog care giver it is important to be aware of the major diseases to keep an eye on when interacting with dogs. Veterinary Pet Insurance (the number one provider of pet insurance in America) recently released a report on the most common diseases clients file claims for.

The six most common diseases are as follows:

1) Skin allergies
2) Ear infections
3) Stomach upsets
4) Urinary tract infection
5) Benign Tumors
6) Pyoderma (hot spots/bacterial skin infections)

According to DogDayCare-Experts.com, as the owner or caregiver of a dog it can be expected that the dog will experience at least one of these problems during their lifetime. Skin allergies, Ear infections, and Pyoderma can be found during any stage of a dog's life. While an upset stomach may be more prevalent in puppies because of their tendency to chew and eat everything in sight. Tumors, Skin diseases, and Arthritis will be more common with older dogs.

It's hard to prevent a dog from getting an infection or disease, but... it is possible to minimize the affects of disease by spending a lot of time with your dog and catching these problems as early as possible. When one spends quality time petting and playing with a dog it is easy to realize that a dog has sore joints or skin infections. By catching these problems in the early stages it is possible to greatly reduce the effect some of these diseases can have on a dog.

Dog owners and especially Dog Daycares should keep these top six diseases dogs get in mind. It is important for someone who runs a Dog Daycare to do a daily check on each dog to ensure they do not have any fleas, skin infections, sore joints, or lumps anywhere on their body. Running a Dog Daycare is a unique experience and it is important to take extra time and make sure they are diseases free.

As a Dog Daycare owner it is very important to make sure all dogs are healthy and free of disease. If a sick dog is found... inform the owner of the dog immediately. Even though sharing bad news is not fun, the dog owner will greatly appreciate the prompt warning. If a sick dog is found... be sure to separate this dog from the group until it is feeling better. This will prevent the spread of disease as well as allowing the sick or infected dog to recuperate without dealing with social pressures in a pack.

Common Garden Flower Diseases

Common Garden Flower Diseases
By Lee Dobbins

Gardening can be a fun and relaxing hobby but it is not without it's downsides. That downside comes in the form of pests and diseases that can ruin your plants if you are not careful.

No garden is immune from disease and your best way to deal with it is to educate yourself as to the common pests and diseases in your area. Bacteria, fungi and viruses can attack both flowering and non flowering plants. Fungi are able to survive in the soil, independent of the plants, while both bacteria and viruses require a plant host for their survival.

Fungi are primitive organisms that reproduce through spores which are very hard to kill. Fungi make spores in huge quantities and they spread rapidly. Some spores can affect a plant through the roots and others through the leaves. Fungi can lie dormant for years in the soil just waiting for the right conditions to activate it. A single infected plant can release up to 100 million spores, so it is important to completely eradicate any fungal infection.

Bacteria, on the other hand, need both warmth and water to multiply and grow. Therefore, the majority of bacterial diseases are more of a problem in climates that are both warm and wet. Bacteria can be spread thorough splashing water such as rain or overhead watering. Many times it enters plants through a natural opening like a flower, or through a wound or cut in a stem or leaf.

Viruses can only reproduce from within the cells of the plant. They are smaller even than bacteria and can be transmitted by insects or carried by infected seeds or pollen. Like bacteria, viruses often enter plants through cuts or wounds in the stems, leaves or other parts of the plant.

As with all other disease treatment, the first step to effectively treating a viral, bacterial or fungal infection in the garden is to diagnose it properly. Every gardener should keep a book or guide on hand which shows the effects of common plant diseases. This guide will prove invaluable when trying to figure out what is bothering your plants. If you are still stumped for a diagnosis, be sure to seek the assistance of the staff at your local garden center, or the help of a more experienced gardener.

If you need to treat your garden for any of these problems, you should first try natural non invasive methods. Try to avoid harsh chemicals and fungicides or same them for a last resort. While you may have to turn to using them, remember that they are not good for the environment so keep to using only the minimum amounts recommended.

What You Need to Know About Viral Diseases?

What You Need to Know About Viral Diseases?
By Mansi Aggarwal

There is a very long-standing liaison between human beings and virus that wander unreservedly in our environment. Virus has a long history of disconcerting people.

A virus is a microorganism that is not visible to the naked eye. It is highly contagious and communicable. A virus attacks and clips to a living cell of the human body. It then discharges its DNA or RNA, which smashes the original genetic material and functioning of the cell. But before the victimized cell expires, it leaves or releases more of that virus. The virus multiplied in such a fashion impedes the growth and working of other healthy cells too, so much so that sooner or later the entire body comes in its grips. However, the immune system of the body endeavors its best to brawl the viral attack. But it does not succeed in all the cases. Due to this reason, the doctors and dieticians prescribe a healthy diet rich in nutrition that strengthens the resistance of the body.

The Residence and Transmission of Virus- there are different types of viruses known. Some infect humans, others animals and a few affect both. Viruses are everywhere in our surroundings. They can be transmitted via the food we eat, air we breathe, water we drink, sexual contact etc.

Some common Viral Infections- there are some well known viruses and the diseases caused by them.

HIV virus is one that destroys the cells in the immune system of our body. It is therefore named as HIV i.e. Human Immunodeficiency Virus. HIV takes the form of AIDS at an advanced later stage. HIV virus reaches the human body through several ways such as- via sex with a partner who is already living with HIV, though infected mothers milk to her child, through human saliva, HIV contaminated needles, syringes and so forth.

Thus, one should be very cautious regarding all these factors. Completely safety should be observed to avert lifelong HIV infection especially because no adequate cure is yet available to eliminate the effect of HIV.

Hepatitis is even caused by virus. Since different kinds of viruses are at work, there are different types of hepatitis. These viruses harm the human liver, which results in its burning or inflammation.

Hepatitis A and E spread via the food and water of the infected person and through anal sex. There exists a vaccine for hepatitis A but not for E. Hepatitis B is caused by unprotected sex, childbirth and contact with infected person. Vaccination is available for hepatitis B and it is better nowadays to get vaccinated against it. This sterilization also ceases the threat to be caught by hepatitis D in future. Hepatitis C virus is transferred by the way of contaminated blood and is cured through medicines.

A possible prevention to hepatitis is to maintain hygiene and vigilance in matters of sex and contacts with other persons.

West Nile Virus is known for causing diseases in animals, birds as well as humans. In humans the WNV reaches through the bite of an infected mosquito. Once the virus enters an individuals blood, it can get transferred to all those who come in contact with it though blood transfusions, organ transplants, breastfeed and so forth.

In order to prevent oneself from the WNV, check the population of mosquitoes in your area and near your house. Dont allow water logging, open bins, unhygienic sanitation, open pits etc. in your vicinity.Medication through drugs and no vaccination per se is present for WNV.

Mostly the Asian and African continents encounter the threat of Polio Virus. This virus can result in a minor to complete paralysis. The poliovirus can infect person of any age. Due to the lack of hygiene this virus comes in the air through human feces and gets circulated. It enters the human body through his mouth and makes its way to the intestines. This virus particularly damages the legs of the person. The paralysis in legs due to poliovirus cannot be cured. It also destroys the respiratory system by making the breathing muscles immobile.

Most often polio hits the infants. Polio drops and vaccines are available everywhere. People should take them and give these to their kids too.

Winning the Battle Against Autoimmune Diseases

Winning the Battle Against Autoimmune Diseases
By Kerry Greening

First, what do we mean by autoimmunity or autoimmune disease?

A process in which the bodys immune system causes illness by mistakenly attacking healthy cells, organs, or tissues in the body that is essential for good health. Your own immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys your body tissue that it believes to be foreign.

Some of the major autoimmune diseases are;

Active Chronic Hepatitis, Addison's Disease, Anti-phospholipid Syndrome, Celiac Disease, Crohns Disease, Cushings Syndrome, Dermatomyositis, (Type I) Diabetes, Discoid Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis, Pemphigoid, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Systemic Lupus Erythematosis, and Fibromyalgia Fibromyositis.

There are many many more.

An estimated 50 million Americans suffer from symptoms -- everything from fatigue to joint pains to depression, to numb hands and feet, to heart palpitations -- signs that the immune system has turned upon itself.

Many people are looking for treatments for reversing autoimmune disease what works. You need to understand what caused your body to attack itself in the first place. If you address these issues your body can reverse the symptoms.

We're all familiar with the term immunity now that AIDS a disease that directly attacks your immune system has become so prominent. To truly understand the word, it means, essentially, resistance to disease. Generally we are speaking of infectious disease, and immunity comes through your body's exposure to the disease. If you have mumps as a child, you know that we are not susceptible to a second episode of mumps because your body has built up immunity to the condition.

Also you acquire immunity through artificial means such as vaccination or immunization. Originally immunity was thought of as the body's way of defending itself against disease. One of the basic concepts of immunity in the early days of the twentieth century has been that if immunity is going to benefit us, it has to be directed to something foreign, something outside of the body. So it has always been the understanding of immunologists that the immune response only concerns bacteria, viruses and foreign.

You body can distinguish what is itself from what is not itself. But something has gone wrong, as we have seen a dramatic increase in autoimmune conditions in the past 20 years. Your own immune system is attacking itself; your immune response attacks your body the host.

Autoimmune disease is a disorder that occurs because of autoimmunity--a disease that is caused by an immune response to the body of the patient himself or herself. There are currently over 80 autoimmune diseases.

Why and how does autoimmunity arise in some people's body?

What is causing your body to produce an immune response to itself?

Many people in this world do not have these autoimmune conditions; therefore we know that the body normally distinguishes self from non-self. Every one of us has some degree of autoimmunity naturally, and it does not seem to do us any harm unless something has gone or goes wrong.

To help us to understand that all of these autoimmune diseases as varied as they are in their location in the human body and the systems and organs they affect they are related because they are all caused by autoimmunity.

Once diagnosed, while doctors may prescribe pain relievers, hormones, or immunosuppressants to treat the symptoms, but when a patient asks about the cause, the life-long health implications, or how to heal such conditions, doctors simply shrug their shoulders and say they do not have any answers.

So begs the question, what causes autoimmunity?

We really need to understand the root causes of this major problem that is leading to these autoimmune disease conditions. If we understand what the root cause or causes of this devastating problem, then we can address it and restore health and vitality. America's abundant and prosperous culture has resulted in a substantial decline in our food supply's nutritional content.

Over the past 60 years or so, the increase of chemicals in our environment through the industrial revolution, the use of insecticides and preservatives, hormones and steroids induced into our meat and food supplies, the increase of fast food and junk foods in our diets combined with the lack of proper soil management has left us with a basic food supply contaminated and lacking the necessary life sustaining nutritional elements.

Literally we are being starved of nutrients that our body's must have to maintain health in the westernized cultures combined with high levels of hundreds of chemicals a stressful lifestyle and lack of proper regular exercise are the major contributing factors to autoimmunity.

Current allopathic medicine knows no cause or successful treatment for most autoimmune diseases, however when you look at the root causes of these disease conditions you know how address and stop autoimmune disease. Simply by rejuvenating and optimizing our cell communication function the Autoimmune Disease is terminated by the then full functioning, optimal and healthy immune system.

In other words people with autoimmune conditions have deficient mis-communicated cells and immune systems. All disease conditions are ultimately a result of improper cell-to-cell communication at some level. All diseases have an immune and /or glandular component. Cell to cell communication is the critical key to homeostasis (balance of health) and immune system function.

By providing key nutrients that are missing from your diet back into your daily food can give you back the health you lost due to auto immunity. In 1996 it was discovered that there are essential nutrients for health, that are non-toxic, do not interfere with bodily functions like drugs do and with these the body can recognize, defend, nourish, regulate, repair and cleanse itself. Every chronic degenerative disease is responding very positively, often to the elimination of every symptom. The nutrients are made from natural foods and they work harmoniously with prescription drugs and are not intended to take the place of needed medical treatment. They are a complement to our modern day medicine, not an alternative. The word is slowly spreading amongst the medical community that there is help out there. It always takes time for a new discovery of any kind to be accepted but the time is coming when this information will be common knowledge.

Inside your body there is an amazing protection mechanism called the immune system. We do not notice it when it is working as it should be, but we do notice when it is not. Your complex immune system is made up of many components, cells and systems working together to serve and protect your health and well being.

To work effectively each of these cell groups and systems must have proper structure and function, when your body is overtaxed with chemicals, stress, toxins, overuse of antibiotics and has nutrient deficiencies your body becomes vulnerable to microbes, bacteria, and loses the ability to function properly. As we discussed earlier, the result with an autoimmune disease is your body starts attacking itself and you end up with a miscommunicated dysfunctional immune system.

Science is validating that virtually every disease has altered and missing structures of glycoforms on the cell of the person affected with the specific disease. Where a healthy person has the proper structure and assembly of glycoforms coating their cells.

Your body will repair itself, regenerate itself, restore itself, and defend itself as long as you provide your body with the right tools it requires to function correctly. Restore Your Health and Balance Your Immune System

By providing essential and required nutrients back into your diet, your body will have the nutrients (tools) it requires to reassemble the proper immune system structures at the level of your cells. You can restore proper function to your bodys cells, so you no longer have to live with the debilitating auto immune challenge. Eliminate Your Auto Immune Condition Today

Dog Diseases: A Quick Guide To Fight The Early Symptoms

Dog Diseases: A Quick Guide To Fight The Early Symptoms
By Joann Grant

Like all the domestic animals, dogs are susceptible to many diseases. So in order to keep them healthy, it is necessary to understand the various diseases they can suffer from. Here is your quick guide on common dog diseases:

Rabies: This disease is caused due to a virus which affects the central nervous system of the dog. It generally spreads through the saliva. Rabies has several stages. In the first stage, there appears some behavior changes in your dog. As it reaches the second stage, the dog becomes very aggressive and by the third stage the body parts of the dog stop coordinating with each other. Once encountered the disease, there remains no cure.

Distempter: This is considered as the biggest threat to the whole population of the dog species. The symptoms are heavy nasal discharge, congestion in the chest, weight loss, coughing, gunky eyes and diarrhea. As the disease reaches its later stages, it has a direct effect on the nervous system of the dog causing paralysis. It is a contagious disease and the virus can be encountered by the air. Even by coming in contact with the excretion of the infected dog, the healthy dog can get afflicted. Once the dog is infected, then there is no cure for the disease. This deadly disease can be prevented by giving a proper vaccination to the dog.

Bloat: It is a serious disorder in a dog, wherein there occurs a twisting in the stomach of the animal. It generally occurs due to over eating. If the dog appears restless and depressed with dry heaves, then you must treat him for bloat.

Parvovirus: This virus is a fast killer as the symptoms can be seen in the dogs within hours of the virus attack, even killing the dog within 48-72 hours. It is a contagious disease and directly attacks the intestinal tract of the dog's digestive system. The effect of the virus can also be seen on the heart of the dog. The symptoms include depression, severe form of diarrhea, vomiting and also loss of appetite. In this disease the color of the feacel matter changes and often have blood stains.

Canine Viral Hepatitis: This disease directly targets the kidney, the liver and the blood vessels of the dog. The symptoms include loss in appetite, intense thirst, vomiting and hemorrhages. The virus of the disease spreads through the faecel matter of the other dogs. The dogs can be prevented from this disease by administering them with the vaccination.

Kennel Cough: This is the most common respiratory disease among the dogs, wherein a typical kind of cough can be seen in the dogs. If given proper treatment, the disorder can be mended.

Leptospirosis: It is a bacterial disease. It spreads through the excretion of the animals. If human beings any how come in contact with this virus, they can also be infected. There is not one but several species of bacterias that produce this disease in dogs. The common symptoms of this disease are kidney inflammation, lethargy, conjuctivita, low grade fever and even sometimes clotting of blood. If the disease is more chronic the symptoms can be jaundice, pneumonia and intestinal inflammation.

Retinal Dysplasia: It is a disorder where there is an abnormal development of the retina. There occurs folds in the outer layers of the retina. It is the most common type of disease that is present in most of the breeds of dogs. A minor form of dysplasia causes minor vision problems, whereas an acute one can lead to total blindness in dogs. Cataract is also accompanied by this disorder.

Lyme Disease: It is a bacterial disease that is spread by ticks. The dog suffers from joint pains, loss of appetite, fever and lethargy. Tetracycline, an antibiotic is used for the treatment of this disease.

It is thus important to detect early symptoms of these diseases in your pet dogs and meet your vet as soon as possible. This will not only keep your dog healthy but will also keep it away from any of the life threatening diseases.

Chronic Diseases and Pregnancy

Chronic Diseases and Pregnancy
By Yana Mikheeva

Speaking about health before pregnancy, we mean way of life, nutrition, physical activity, habits, and also possible chronic diseases, such as heightened blood pressure or diabetes. If you have such diseases, then you just have to visit a doctor beforehand. You know, this may complicate pregnancy, bring harm to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor which medicinal preparations and in which doses you take. Doctor will recommend you tests and observations you should pass, for example, X-ray photography. Try to discuss all questions you have for the moment.

It is much simpler to think over a strategy of treatment before pregnancy and then worrying about complications.

Diabetes

Diabetes it is a disease, appearing as a result of lack of insulin in organism, this hormone is produced by pancreas. If you have diabetes, it will be more difficult for you to become pregnant. Moreover, diabetes can influence passing of pregnancy seriously. First of all, it can become a reason of miscarriage or giving birth to a dead baby. Secondly, women suffering from diabetes can give birth to babies with inborn defects.

You can reduce risk of such complications due to constant control of sugar content in blood during pregnancy. If you dont care of your state, then diabetes while pregnancy may turn out to be dangerous both for you and your future baby. Majority of complications, connected with diabetes, are displayed during first trimester, i.e. during first 13 weeks of pregnancy.

Pregnancy may cause complications of state while diabetes, what will require increase of insulin doses. This can be easily determined with help of test on sugar content in blood. Majority of doctors recommend taking a special care of this disease development during at least 2-3 months before conception. This will help to reduce probability of risk of miscarriage or other problems. Probably, you will have to pass tests on sugar content in blood several times per day, to control disease completely and avoid possible complications. Past experience shows that women, suffering from diabetes, had serious problems with conception and passing of pregnancy. But die to complete and constant control even women-diabetics can count on successful result of pregnancy and delivery.

If in your family there were cases of diabetes or you have slightest suspicions as for your own health, pass tests before pregnancy surely.

Asthma

About 1% of pregnant women suffer from asthma. It is impossible to predict influence of pregnancy on asthma. Half of women, suffering from this disease, notice no changes during pregnancy, about 25% feel even slight improvement, and the rest (25%) observe worsening of state.

Majority of anti-asthma remedies are safe for pregnant, but it is still better to consult a doctor as for preparation to take. Almost all who suffer from asthma know what may become a reason of fit, so avoid contact with allergens before getting pregnant and during whole pregnancy. Try to control your state yet before pregnancy.

Hypertension

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, can cause complication both of mothers and unborn babys health. For women it is connected with risk of refusal of kidneys work, probability of hypertensic crisis or headache. Increase of a future mothers blood pressure may become a reason for decrease of blood inflow to placenta, what will lead to delays of fetus development, i.e. a baby will weigh less, than normal while birth.

If you had high blood pressure before pregnancy, then you just have to take care of it during all 9 months. Probably, gynaecologist will send you to therapeutists or family doctors observation with this purpose. Before making a decision to become pregnant, women, suffering from hypertension, should consult a doctor. Some remedies against high blood pressure are safe for pregnant, some are not. On no account quit taking pills and reduce dose without a doctors prescription! This can be dangerous. If you plan giving birth to a baby, ask you doctor about remedies you are taking against high blood pressure, and about safety of taking these medicines during pregnancy.

Heart diseases

During pregnancy load on heart increases about 50%. If you have sick heart, it is necessary for your doctor to know about it before you become pregnant.

Some heart diseases, such as mitral valve prolapse, can seriously complicate passing of pregnancy. Probably, you will even have to take antibiotics before delivery. Other heart diseases, such as inborn heart disease, may seriously influence state of health. In this case pregnancy and delivery are sometimes contra-indicated.

Consult your doctor as for heart diseases before you become pregnant.

Kidneys and urinary bladder diseases

Infections of urinary system, in particular urinary bladder, often appear during pregnancy. If you dont cure disease in time, infection may pass to kidneys, causing pyelonephritis.

Infections of urinary bladder and pyelonephritis may lead to premature birth. If you ever suffered from pyelonephritis or repeating infections of urinary system, this should be determined before pregnancy.

Stones in kidneys also may complicate passing of pregnancy. This disease is accompanied by severe pains in lower part of belly, so it is quite difficult to diagnose it during pregnancy. Moreover, stones in kidneys may become a reason of appearance of infections of urinary system and pyelonephritis.

If you ever had some only infection of urinary bladder, you should not worry a lot. But you still should inform your doctor about it. He will decide whether you need to pass more careful observation before pregnancy.

Thyroid gland diseases

Thyroid gland diseases may appear both because of excess or lack of thyroid hormone. Excess of hormone is called thyrotoxicosis. In this case metabolism in human organism is speeded up. This may be caused by Graves' disease. Thyrotoxicosis is usually cured with help of operation of medicinal remedies, reducing content of thyroid hormone in organism. If you dont cure this disease, theres rather high level of risk premature birth and giving birth to a baby with low weight.

You can carry our treatment during pregnancy too: therere quite safe preparations, which pregnant women may take.

Lack of thyroid hormone hypothyroidism is usually caused by disease of autoimmune origin. In this case thyroid gland is damaged by anti-bodies, which are produced by your organism. While hypothyroidism taking of thyroid hormones is prescribed. Not cured hypothyroidism threatens with sterility or habitual noncarrying of pregnancy.

If you have thyrotoxicosis or hypothyroidism, you need to pass through observation before pregnancy, to determine doses of medicinal remedies, necessary for treatment. In the process of pregnancy your necessity in preparations may change, and then you will have to pass another observation.

Anemia

Anemia means that theres lack of haemoglobin in your organism. Therere several reasons and in connection with this several kinds of anemia. Symptoms of anemia are weakness, giddiness, lack of air and pale skin. During pregnancy necessity of organism in iron and iron-containing substances increases. If in the beginning of pregnancy you suffer from lack of iron in blood, anemia increases this lack. So you need to take vitamins and preparations, containing full choice of microelements, necessary for organism.

One of specific types of anemia - sicle-cell disease, which is passed genetically: it is mainly spread among black population. If you suffer from sicle-cell disease, your organism is deprived of oxygen. Passing of this kind of anemia can be very painful, and it also may serve as a reason for other diseases and complications during pregnancy. Sicle-cell disease cannot be cured and may be passed to your baby. Women, suffering from sicle-cell disease, have very high percent of miscarriages and infections of urinary system. They also may suffer from high blood pressure and painful hypertension strokes.

Another kind of anemia thalassanemia is also passed genetically. If some of your relatives suffers from thalassanemia or you suppose you can have it, check it before pregnancy.

Lupus

Lupus is a vascular disease of autoimmune origin. This means your organism produces anti-bodies that may destroy your organs or influence functions of these organs negatively. Lupus can affect different organs, including joints, kidneys, lungs and heart.

This disease is hard to diagnose. One woman of 700 in the age from 15 to 64 years suffers from lupus. Among black women it is met more often, in one case of 254. As a rule, lupus more often strikes women, than men, especially women of genital age, i.e. from 20 to 40 years.

Lupus treatment is highly individual and usually means taking if steroids. It is better not to become pregnant during fit of this disease, as miscarriages are extremely often among women suffering from lupus. Risk of giving birth to a dead baby also increases.

Babies, born from mothers, suffering from lupus, can have rash. They also can have different heart diseases. Premature birth and delay of pre-natal development of fetus are also quite possible. If you suffer from lupus, consult your doctor before pregnancy definitely.

Epilepsy and epileptic seizures

Epilepsy is a chronic disease, characterized by different kinds of seizures (fits). Most often epilepsy is displayed by big and small epileptic seizures. Chance of giving birth to a baby with epileptic disease can be 1 of 30 for women, suffering from epilepsy. Such babies have risk of in-born diseases, probably, connected with medicines, which a future mother took during pregnancy.

If you take medicines against epilepsy, it is very important to consult your doctor before pregnancy. Discuss doses and type of medicines, which you take, as many preparations, relieving seizures of epilepsy, cause in-born diseases in babies. However, there are safe remedies for fetus, for example, Phenobarbital.

Seizures can be dangerous both for mother and fetus. So it is especially important to take remedies precisely according to a doctors prescription during pregnancy. On no account reduce dose or quit taking medicine yourself, without a doctor!

Migraine

About 15-20% of all pregnant women suffer from migraine. Many women notice improvement of health during pregnancy. If you are going to take pills against headache during pregnancy, check with your doctor how much they are safe for you and future baby.

Cancerous growths

A question of probability of cancers influence on pregnancy depends on the fact which organ it stroke and how wide is growth. Breast cancer is most often form of cancer, met among women. If you had breast cancer, this will not influence pregnancy anyway, and pregnancy, in its turn, will not cause breast cancer.

Many doctors advice to wait 2-3 years with childbirth after breast cancer treatment. It is very important to discuss case history and method of treatment with your doctor yet before pregnancy. Situation may become quite complicated, if you are pregnant and pass treatment at the same time. Many medicines and remedies against cancer are not safe for future mother and baby.

Other diseases

We examined only some chronic diseases. However, any disease can be dangerous for future baby. So if you suffer from some chronic disease or have to take medicines constantly, discuss it with your doctor. General rule is following: it is better not to take medicines or pass any medical treatment at the moment of conception and on early stages of pregnancy. Laying of all organs and tissues of a baby takes place during 1st trimester of pregnancy, and during this period you need to protect a future baby from harmful influences of medicines or observations. You will feel better and calmer, if you solve all these problems before pregnancy.

Heart Diseases: Statistical Comparison between US and Africa

Heart Diseases: Statistical Comparison between US and Africa
By Hector Milla

Cardiomyopathy is a rare heart muscle disease over the world, but not in Africa where it is one of the major causes of heart failure, according to experts that reviewed all available cardiomyopathy studies performed in Africa, along with all the information about the causes and types of heart muscle disease in Africa, where 10 per cent of the worlds population lives.

A 10 per cent to 17 per cent of cardiac problems found through autopsies in South Africa and Uganda, and 17 per cent to 48 per cent of heart failure diagnoses in many parts of Africa are due to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), which is an enlargement of the entire heart, explain researchers.

In the United States, 4 to 8 per 100,000 people are affected by DCM, but African overall incidence is unknown, because the corresponding studies have not been made yet.

Researchers findings show that Peripartum cardiomyopathy has a very high incidence throughout Africa and Nigeria. This illness can cause heart failure and it develops between the last month of pregnancy and the first five months after childbirth. Peripartum cardiomyopathy incidence in the US is 1 in 15,000 deliveries; meanwhile the incidence in South Africa is 1 in 1,000 cases.

DCM is caused by various factors, under generally accepted African theory. These include untreated high blood pressure, infective and toxic agents, inappropriate immunologic reactions, nutritional deficiencies, and genetic factors.

According to experts, it is important to do more research to understand the underlying reasons for Africas high cardiomyopathy rate, and prevent or reduce it.

Chelation is the process of putting natural substances into the body that chemically bond with toxic materials that are in your body such as minerals, metals and chemicals.

Several books have been written on chelation. It is an inexpensive natural treatment that can cure and prevent disease. (For more information on natural cures for all sorts of disease go to www.drclarkuniversity.org) And, of course, the drug companies cant make money on chelation products so they will continue to try and discredit this natural treatment along with all others that pose a threat to their profit margin.

The opening up of the arteries is the most common benefit you will see from removing the toxins with chelation. If you are concerned about blockages in your arteries this is an answer worth investigating. Another possible benefit is men will not need Viagra in many cases since blood flow throughout the body is dramatically increased, because all the arteries are open, you get more oxygen to the blood, which means your alkalinity pH level goes up, which means you are less prone to cancer or other degenerative diseases. You have more energy. People's skin, hair and nails look better and healthier. Wrinkles can go away. You look younger. You become more flexible. All of your organs start becoming more vibrant and alive - younger and healthier.

There are two types of chelation, oral chelation and intravenous chelation. Oral chelation can be done at home. For faster results, find a healthcare practitioner in your area that does intravenous chelation.

If you are suffering from Cancer, HIV/AIDS, MS, almost any disease, there are natural cures out there, there is a way to remove this suffering from your life, and to do it quickly and inexpensively.

Work and AsbestosRelated Diseases Part One

Work and Asbestos-Related Diseases, Part One
By Hector Milla

Symptoms of lung cancer, asbestosis or other asbestos - related diseases may include chronic cough and hoarseness, wheezing, chest pain, weight loss, fatigue, loss of appetite, dysphonia, coughing up blood and shortness of breath.

If you think that you may have an asbestos - related disease because you worked exposed to asbestos many years and you show any of the symptoms above mentioned, you should visit a specialist doctor to be explored by him and decide whether you need more exams or not.

The doctor may send you for a chest x-ray or chest computed tomography (CT) scan, to determine the existence of lung scars, and pulmonary function test (PFT), to measure the power of your breathing.

Workers with asbestos benign diseases should visit their doctors regularly, because they have higher risks of getting ill of more serious cancer pathology. Therefore, these patients may be send to specialists like a lung expert or an occupational health doctor. (note: other specialists could be helpful too).

Overall, these workers can keep working, but if they do not feel sick, as research states that these patients will avoid more harm to their lungs if the amount of asbestos dust is kept low.

But if the doctor thinks that is better to have no more contact with asbestos or if you have another illness or disability, you may not be able to keep working.

Is so difficult to say you do not must to work on asbestos related jobs, because you need to work if you want to pay the bills, but in this case your decision could have many risks. On the other hand, there is many alternatives for asbestos compensations, so you need to find an specialist lawyer in this subject, this could be very useful if you decided not to be asbestos worker any more.

There is a Cure For All Diseases and They Really Don't Want You to Know About It

There is a Cure For All Diseases and They Really Don't Want You to Know About It
By Michele Michaels

What they do is suppress information and block those who have alternative methods of healing from making those methods public knowledge. So many of the terminal, non curable diseases are being cured as a matter of course in other countries. Those that are being cured in this country are doing it by their own research and help from books and web sites such as www.drclarkuniversity.org and books such as The Cure For All Diseases by Dr. Hulda Clark. Or Natural Cures They Dont Want You To Know About by Kevin Trudeaux, who also reference Dr. Clarks books, such as the one above and her book The Cure For All Cancers.

The powers that be in this country have tried to put Dr. Clark out of business, and they did she has to practice in Mexico, and they tried to shut her down there too, but fortunately for the those who do know about her and her research, they were unsuccessful.

Kevin Trudeaux, author of Natural Cures They Dont Want You To Know About called for a federal and state investigation of the New York Consumer Protection Board as a result of the recent arrest of its Executive Deputy Director for felony possession of crack cocaine coupled with the erratic conduct of the agency under her control.

Mr. Trudeau said his attorneys will be contacting the New York Attorney General to ask for a full investigation of the agency's conduct under the apparent control of Caroline Quartararo, who was arrested on an Albany, NY, street two weeks ago for possession of crack cocaine.

In September 2005, a federal judge determined the CPB had violated Mr. Trudeau's First Amendment rights by attempting to coerce television stations into refusing to air advertisements for his best selling book, Natural Cures They Don't Want You to Know About.

This is what they do. They put up web sites that offer false information in an attempt to challenge the credibility of anyone who offers any kind of solution that is not officially backed by the pharmaceuticals, AMA, FTC or FDA. If they cant make a profit you dont get the information. And the fact that the information may save your life is not the bottom line that our government and its regulating bodies look at. Or, they do what theyre doing to Kevin Trudeau, trying to block the information getting to the public by attempting to coerce television stations from airing the advertisement.

Dr. Hulda Clark and Kevin Trudeaux, and others including Sang Whang, who is an engineer, scientist, and inventor all have established the cause of many of these diseases and have had remarkable results in curing them.

According to Dr.Clark:

The Cause for many years we have all believed that cancer is different from other diseases. We believed that cancer behaves like a fire, in that you can't stop it once it has started. Therefore, you have to cut it out or radiate it to death or chemically destroy every cancerous cell in the body since it can never become normal again. NOTHING COULD BE MORE WRONG! And we have believed that cancers of different types such as leukemia or breast cancer have different causes. Wrong again! In this book, The Cure For All Cancers you will see that all cancers are alike. They are all caused by a parasite. A single parasite! It is the human intestinal fluke. And if you kill this parasite, the cancer stops immediately. The tissue becomes normal again. In order to get cancer, you must have this parasite.

How can the human intestinal fluke cause cancer? This parasite typically lives in the intestine where it might do little harm, causing only colitis, Crohn's disease, or irritable bowel syndrome, or perhaps nothing at all. But if it invades a different organ, like the uterus or the kidneys or liver, it does a great deal of harm. If it establishes itself in the liver, it causes cancer! It only establishes itself in the liver in some people. These people have isopropyl alcohol in their bodies.

All cancer patients have both isopropyl alcohol and the intestinal fluke in their livers. The solvent, isopropyl alcohol, is responsible for letting the fluke establish itself in the liver. In order to get cancer, you must have both the parasite and isopropyl alcohol in your body. From the book The Cure for all Cancers. Page 1. To see more information on this book and other books by Dr. Hulda Clark go to www.drclarkuniversity.org click on books and products and then on the University book store.

As Dr. Clark espouses and Kevin Trudeaux, so does Sang Whang. Disease and aging are due to a build up of toxins and the inability to remove the acidic waste products. Dr. Clark and Kevin Trudeaux both approach the problem of disease by eliminating the toxins. Making sure there is no isopropyl alcohol in the system, for example.

Sang Whang who has been working on reverse aging says: At the turn of the century, man began to fly. Today, we have already landed on the moon. Isn't it reasonable to expect Science today should discover the technology to reverse aging? Well, Science Has!

When Americans think of health, we think of diets and exercise. Diet and exercise help our body to dispose of acidic waste products. However, as we know, diet and exercise are sometimes difficult to stay with and not as effective as time-honored methods practiced through the centuries in Asia. Until now, Americans do it the hard way while Asians do it the simple and easy way. Science has made it simpler and easier to remove acidic waste products that have accumulated within our body. Sang Whang has created a product called Alkalife. AlkaLife is a patented alkaline concentrate. Mixing 2 drops of AlkaLife solution in an 8-oz. glass of water changes the ordinary drinking water to high pH alkaline drinking water. With AlkaLife, we can get alkaline water without any expensive alkaline water maker. A 1.2 oz. bottle can be carried conveniently in a pocket or purse. In order to get the health benefits, one should drink 5 glasses of high pH alkaline water a day distributed as evenly as possible. By carrying an AlkaLife bottle around, one can drink alkaline water anytime and anywhere.

Product benefits

The foods that we eat give us energy by oxidizing, afterwards they become acidic wastes. Since our body cannot get rid of all the wastes it produces, they get accumulated somewhere in our body. This accumulation of non-disposed acidic wastes is what causes aging. Some examples of solidified acidic wastes are cholesterol, fatty acid, uric acid kidney stone, urates, sulfates, and phosphates. The best way to neutralize and get these wastes out of our body is to drink alkaline water.Sang Whangs book reverse aging and his Alkaline and bicarbolife product can also be found at www.drclarkuniversity.org click on books and products then on the university book store and then on Alkalife-Reverse Aging.

Diabetes: Alzheimer's and Diabetes Could Be Linked Diseases Part II

Diabetes: Alzheimer's and Diabetes Could Be Linked Diseases; Part II
By Hector Milla

The group of researchers from Brown University Medical School analyzed, in the frontal part of the brain, one of the major area affected by Alzheimer's, insulin and insulin receptor function.

The team discovered that the levels of insulin receptors and the brain's ability to respond to insulin decreased as the severity of Alzheimer's increased.

According to the experts, insulin receptors were nearly 80 percent lower than in a normal brain in the most advanced stage of Alzheimer's.

Two abnormal situations related to insulin in Alzheimer's were also found by researchers. The first abnormal situation was that as the disease progressed, levels of insulin dropped. In relation to the second one, experts explained that insulin and its related protein, insulin-related growth factor-I, lose the ability to bind to cell receptors, which creates a resistance to the insulin growth factors, causing the cells to malfunction and die.

For the neuropathologist at Rhode Island Hospital and professor of pathology at Brown University Medical School, Suzanne M. de la Monte, this means that they are able to show that insulin impairment happens early in the disease, as well as they are able to show it is linked to major neurotransmitters responsible for cognition.

We're able to show it's linked to poor energy metabolism, and it's linked to abnormalities that contribute to the tangles characteristic of advanced Alzheimer's disease. This work ties several concepts together and demonstrates that Alzheimer's disease is quite possibly a Type 3 diabetes, explains de la Monte, the leader of the research.

Fitness and Exercise Can Prevent Diseases

Fitness and Exercise Can Prevent Diseases
By Paul Cris

Exercise reduces the chances of developing health problems. If you are suffering from obesity and diabetes, immediately plan an exercise schedule. Exercise and fitness programs are useful in managing your blood sugar levels. Adhering to an exercise program is necessary if you need to see results.

The most common heath problem in America is high triglyceride levels (high cholesterol). This problem is closely associated with other problems such as strokes and heart attacks. So to prevent this problem, it is better to pursue a wholesome diet. At the same time a regular exercise schedule is required too.

Nowadays people prefer to stay indoors due to the various entertainment devices at home. No activity has led to obesity. Parents must encourage their children to take up sports like basketball, volleyball and other exercises. Most of the Americans have become health conscious and are engaged in diverse sports types like swimming, aerobics, sports, running etc.

Brisk walking has become a very easy form of exercise today because it does not require any training. Volksmarch is a very popular activity in Germany where many people get together and go for a long walk in the evenings. They also enjoy eating together. So, go out and start exercising to stay healthy and fit.

Common Diseases of Tropical Fish and What to Do About Them

Common Diseases of Tropical Fish and What to Do About Them
By Graham Wardle

While tropical fish can be a wonderful hobby that many people enjoy, they also can be susceptible to diseases that if not caught early on can lead to early death of the fish and also risk of it spreading to other fish in the same habitat. Although there are literally hundreds of diseases that tropical fish can acquire, there is usually only a handful that most owners have to be on the watch for. Lets look at some of them and help you understand how to identify them.

* Sometimes, straight from the store, fish will die. This is usually caused by something that is termed new tank syndrome and while not a disease as we traditionally think of them, it can be a problem unless you learn how to avoid it. All new fish should be introduced gradually to any environment. A minimum of 24-48 hours of keeping the bag the fish is in from the store emerged in the new water will usually take care of this problem. However, if it persists it could be an indication that the water is not the right temperature for them to survive or that there are contaminants in the water that is causing the sudden death.

* If you see something that looks like wool or cotton on the fish that does not mean they are preparing for winter. It is a sign of an infection and if caught early enough can be treated with an anti-fungal and/or a salt bath. Most experts recommend the anti-fugal treatment, and many pet and fish stores can recommend what is best for your environment.

* White spots on tropical fish are a very common disease that has a habit of showing up in new aquariums. This is usually an indication that a parasite is making its home in your aquarium. Again, there are a number of treatments available for this and many stores recommend that new aquariums be treated before any fish are introduced.

* If your fish appear bloated this is a symptom of a bacterial infection. It may also be indicated by what appears to be raised fins. Most of the time the cause is poor water conditions. Check your filter and if necessary, upgrade the filter to handle your aquarium size. There are medications available but they rarely work unless the root cause (poor water) is resolved.

* If your fish appear to have flaking scales, or dull color this can also be a sign of poor water conditions or the presence of parasites. The parasites carry a disease known as slime disease and there are medications available for this. The poor water can be solved as noted above.

Weve given you a quick overview of some of the more common conditions you may notice in your aquarium with your tropical fish. By making sure you keep on top of the general health of your fish you can ensure that they will provide years of enjoyment and beauty in your home or office.

The Author, Graham Wardle, offers tips and advice about the hobby of keeping fish both indoors and outside at http://beta-tropical-and-pond-fish-news.blogspot.com and also at http://tropicalpondandfreshwaterfishnews.blogspot.com

Bacteria and Foodborne Diseases

Bacteria and Food-borne Diseases
By Richard Massey

Types of Bacteria

Bacteria are all around us, in the air, water, ground, on our skin and in our bodies. They are classified in a variety of ways, but for our purpose we can categorize them in a more basic way.

Harmless bacteria Most bacteria fall into this category. They are neither help us nor are harmful to us. These bacteria have a specific purpose, but are not a concerning to us in terms of food safety,

Beneficial bacteria Believe it or not some bacteria are helpful to us. Some bacteria are used in foods to make cheeses and yogurts. And still others live in our bodies to fight of harmful bacteria.

Undesirable bacteria Undesirable bacteria is responsible for food spoilage. This type of bacteria may not make you sick, but they show themselves by the use of odors, sticky or slimy surfaces and discoloration.

Illness causing bacteria or pathogens These are the bacteria that cause most food-borne illnesses. Pathogens do not necessarily leave detectable odors or taste in food. This makes it impossible to tell if food is contaminated by smelling or tasting, or looking at it. The only way to protect yourself from this bacteria is by proper food handling and sanitation.

Bacteria Growth

Bacteria simply multiply by splitting in half. Under the ideal conditions, they can double in number every 15 to 30 minutes. This means that one single bacterium could multiply to a million in less than 6 hours.

What do bacteria need to multiply?

Food Some from of food is a basic requirement for bacteria to grow.

Moisture Water is required for bacteria in order to absorb food. Dry foods will not support bacterial growth. As well, foods with very high salt or sugar content make bacteria unable to use the moisture present.

Temperature Bacteria grow best at warm temperatures between 40 and 140F. This temperature range is what we call the food danger zone.

Air Most bacteria require oxygen to grow, but not all. There are some exceptions, one type of bacteria being botulism.

Time When bacteria are introduced to a new environment, they need time to adjust before they start to grow. This time is called the lag phase and last about one hour.

How is bacteria transferred?

Bacteria are carried from one place to another by being carried. This can happened by peoples hands, coughs, other food, utensils, equipment, water, or pests.

Preventing Bacteria Growth

Now that we know how bacteria grow and are spread; we should be able to prevent food-borne illness by following three simple steps.

1.Keep bacteria from spreading by not letting anything that might contain bacteria tough the food. This includes people, dirty equipment, utensils and possibly other foods.

2.Stop bacteria from growing by taking away the conditions that encourage growth. The most effective way is to keep food out of the danger zone. Keep foods below 40F and about 140F

3.Finally kill the bacteria. Most bacteria are killed if they are subject to a temperature above 165F for 30 seconds. This is how we make food safe by cooking. This heat is also how we sanitize dishes and equipment. Certain chemicals (such as bleach) also kill bacteria. Using sanitizing agents is best way to sanitize counter tops and large equipment.

Diseases of the Colon Caused by Constipation and Past Emotional Trauma

Diseases of the Colon Caused by Constipation and Past Emotional Trauma
By Rudy Silva

It was estimated that of all the people who died of cancer colon, lung, prostate, and breast - in 1999 sixteen percent were attributed to colon cancer. But, how many of these other cancers originated in your colon? We do know that colon cancer is the second leading cause of deaths in the United States.

We dont know what cancers originated in your colon because the medical profession treats symptoms not the causes. Many doctors do not go looking for the cause of your problem. They dont have the time. In fact, they normally will not tell you what you need to do to prevent your illness. Sometimes the reason they will not tell you is they just do not know.

It is the nutritionists job to tell you what foods and supplements you need to prevent and to overcome specific illnesses and what to eat to eliminate or stop constipation.

Why is it that some many people are dying of various diseases at such an early age at forty, at fifty, at sixty, even 30, or younger? They die of heart diseases, blood diseases, cancers, autoimmune diseases and the list goes on. It has been know for a longtime why diseases occur and what you can do to prevent it.

These death producing illnesses are a result of our life style - the foods we eat, the water we drink, the air pollution we breathe, the thoughts we think, the toxins we are exposed to at work, and the cleaning products we use at home.

What is it that causes us to behave in a way that is harmful to others or ourselves in ways that affect our health, our relationships, and our life? Why do people smoke when they know it causes Cancer? Why do people drink coffee when they know caffeine affects their adrenal gland, which eventually leads to exhaustion? Why is it that people eat sugar when they know it has untold health effects beyond diabetes? The answer is simple but difficult to accept.

All illness originates from repressed traumatic memories resulting from early life trauma.

Dr Arthur Janov explains this clearly in his book, 1996, Why You Get Sick How You Get Well.

Over the last thirty years I have learned a great deal about humans and what drives them. As trite as it may seem, what I have found is a single yet complex emotion called love. Not the romantic love of novels, but a fundamental love the love of a parent for a child. When a child lacks love and nurturing, no matter how that lack is manifest, it creates pain, and if this pain is not felt or integrated into the system, it will in turn cause physical and emotional illness in later life.

It takes disciple to change behavior, thought, and life style, which are good for health. This is what is necessary to reduce or eliminate illness. This is what is necessary to bring on a feeling of well-being way into your old age at 80, at 90, at 100, and well beyond that. With the new anti-aging nutrients and supplements on the market, I can see people living well into 120 years provided they follow a good lifestyle.

How many people are willing to devote the time and money to start eating the right foods and change their lifestyle? This is the first step in reducing or eliminating constipation.
