The group of researchers from Brown University Medical School analyzed, in the frontal part of the brain, one of the major area affected by Alzheimer's, insulin and insulin receptor function.

The team discovered that the levels of insulin receptors and the brain's ability to respond to insulin decreased as the severity of Alzheimer's increased.

According to the experts, insulin receptors were nearly 80 percent lower than in a normal brain in the most advanced stage of Alzheimer's.

Two abnormal situations related to insulin in Alzheimer's were also found by researchers. The first abnormal situation was that as the disease progressed, levels of insulin dropped. In relation to the second one, experts explained that insulin and its related protein, insulin-related growth factor-I, lose the ability to bind to cell receptors, which creates a resistance to the insulin growth factors, causing the cells to malfunction and die.

For the neuropathologist at Rhode Island Hospital and professor of pathology at Brown University Medical School, Suzanne M. de la Monte, this means that they are able to show that insulin impairment happens early in the disease, as well as they are able to show it is linked to major neurotransmitters responsible for cognition.

We're able to show it's linked to poor energy metabolism, and it's linked to abnormalities that contribute to the tangles characteristic of advanced Alzheimer's disease. This work ties several concepts together and demonstrates that Alzheimer's disease is quite possibly a Type 3 diabetes, explains de la Monte, the leader of the research.

While tropical fish can be a wonderful hobby that many people enjoy, they also can be susceptible to diseases that if not caught early on can lead to early death of the fish and also risk of it spreading to other fish in the same habitat. Although there are literally hundreds of diseases that tropical fish can acquire, there is usually only a handful that most owners have to be on the watch for. Lets look at some of them and help you understand how to identify them.

* Sometimes, straight from the store, fish will die. This is usually caused by something that is termed new tank syndrome and while not a disease as we traditionally think of them, it can be a problem unless you learn how to avoid it. All new fish should be introduced gradually to any environment. A minimum of 24-48 hours of keeping the bag the fish is in from the store emerged in the new water will usually take care of this problem. However, if it persists it could be an indication that the water is not the right temperature for them to survive or that there are contaminants in the water that is causing the sudden death.

* If you see something that looks like wool or cotton on the fish that does not mean they are preparing for winter. It is a sign of an infection and if caught early enough can be treated with an anti-fungal and/or a salt bath. Most experts recommend the anti-fugal treatment, and many pet and fish stores can recommend what is best for your environment.

* White spots on tropical fish are a very common disease that has a habit of showing up in new aquariums. This is usually an indication that a parasite is making its home in your aquarium. Again, there are a number of treatments available for this and many stores recommend that new aquariums be treated before any fish are introduced.

* If your fish appear bloated this is a symptom of a bacterial infection. It may also be indicated by what appears to be raised fins. Most of the time the cause is poor water conditions. Check your filter and if necessary, upgrade the filter to handle your aquarium size. There are medications available but they rarely work unless the root cause (poor water) is resolved.

* If your fish appear to have flaking scales, or dull color this can also be a sign of poor water conditions or the presence of parasites. The parasites carry a disease known as slime disease and there are medications available for this. The poor water can be solved as noted above.

Weve given you a quick overview of some of the more common conditions you may notice in your aquarium with your tropical fish. By making sure you keep on top of the general health of your fish you can ensure that they will provide years of enjoyment and beauty in your home or office.

Types of Bacteria

Bacteria are all around us, in the air, water, ground, on our skin and in our bodies. They are classified in a variety of ways, but for our purpose we can categorize them in a more basic way.

Harmless bacteria Most bacteria fall into this category. They are neither help us nor are harmful to us. These bacteria have a specific purpose, but are not a concerning to us in terms of food safety,

Beneficial bacteria Believe it or not some bacteria are helpful to us. Some bacteria are used in foods to make cheeses and yogurts. And still others live in our bodies to fight of harmful bacteria.

Undesirable bacteria Undesirable bacteria is responsible for food spoilage. This type of bacteria may not make you sick, but they show themselves by the use of odors, sticky or slimy surfaces and discoloration.

Illness causing bacteria or pathogens These are the bacteria that cause most food-borne illnesses. Pathogens do not necessarily leave detectable odors or taste in food. This makes it impossible to tell if food is contaminated by smelling or tasting, or looking at it. The only way to protect yourself from this bacteria is by proper food handling and sanitation.

Bacteria Growth

Bacteria simply multiply by splitting in half. Under the ideal conditions, they can double in number every 15 to 30 minutes. This means that one single bacterium could multiply to a million in less than 6 hours.

What do bacteria need to multiply?

Food Some from of food is a basic requirement for bacteria to grow.

Moisture Water is required for bacteria in order to absorb food. Dry foods will not support bacterial growth. As well, foods with very high salt or sugar content make bacteria unable to use the moisture present.

Temperature Bacteria grow best at warm temperatures between 40 and 140F. This temperature range is what we call the food danger zone.

Air Most bacteria require oxygen to grow, but not all. There are some exceptions, one type of bacteria being botulism.

Time When bacteria are introduced to a new environment, they need time to adjust before they start to grow. This time is called the lag phase and last about one hour.

How is bacteria transferred?

Bacteria are carried from one place to another by being carried. This can happened by peoples hands, coughs, other food, utensils, equipment, water, or pests.

Preventing Bacteria Growth

Now that we know how bacteria grow and are spread; we should be able to prevent food-borne illness by following three simple steps.

1.Keep bacteria from spreading by not letting anything that might contain bacteria tough the food. This includes people, dirty equipment, utensils and possibly other foods.

2.Stop bacteria from growing by taking away the conditions that encourage growth. The most effective way is to keep food out of the danger zone. Keep foods below 40F and about 140F

3.Finally kill the bacteria. Most bacteria are killed if they are subject to a temperature above 165F for 30 seconds. This is how we make food safe by cooking. This heat is also how we sanitize dishes and equipment. Certain chemicals (such as bleach) also kill bacteria. Using sanitizing agents is best way to sanitize counter tops and large equipment.

I have been writing lots of love vs lust articles lately. I know a lot about this plus there are so many people out there that do not. One thing that is interesting is that 75% of all people 20 and under have had premarital sex. When you get up to age 44 it is 95%.

It is obvious to anyone past 50 that the sexual nature of humanity has changed, with sex being more open and seemingly more dangerous. I really do not think porn helps anyone but the seller. The authors of porn get mega-rich, while opening crevices in minds that should be left closed. I consider porn dangerous and a breeder of sex crimes and unfaithfulness and childhood experimentation.

You have heard that AIDS started with man having sex with the Green Monkey. Well I don't know but one day a male aircraft attendant gets off the airplane and sets the homosexual community upside down. I mean one guy, wherever he got it , has killed more than a million people with an infected sex organ. Probably millions of people.

Male lust in Africa has no soul. They have intercourse with babies. Anything that is a woman that can take it gets poked by lust crazy men and we cannot stop it. The lust is so strong they just keep it up. AIDS has cost the taxpayer millions and millions of dollars and the horny men keep on keeping on.

Now here is what the US Government says to women to avoid STD's

There are steps you can take to keep from getting an STD:

Dont have sex. The best way to prevent any STD is to practice abstinence, or not having vaginal, oral, or anal sex.

Be faithful. Have a sexual relationship with one partner who has been tested for STDs and is not infected is another way to reduce your chances of getting infected. Be faithful to each other, meaning that you only have sex with each other and no one else.

Use condoms. Protect yourself with a condom EVERY time you have vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Condoms should be used for any type of sex with every partner. For vaginal sex, use a latex male condom or a female polyurethane condom. For anal sex, use a latex male condom. For oral sex, use a dental dam. A dental dam is a rubbery material that can be placed over the anus or the vagina before sexual contact.

Know that some methods of birth control, like birth control pills, shots, implants, or diaphragms, will not protect you from STD. If you use one of these methods, be sure to also use a latex condom or dental dam (used for oral sex) correctly every time you have sex.

Talk frankly with your doctor or nurse and your sex partner(s) about any STD you or your partner have or had. Try not to be embarrassed.

My advice is Know Your Man. If you are going to start a sexual relationship, don't start it on the sofa or in the car. Both of you go get tested. If he says he is a virgin, make him do it anyway. Then stay with him until the next guy and get tested again. No one is going to pay attention to me however unless you see some photo's of venereal disease effects and then maybe it will stick with you.

This quantity may be increased by 50 ml each succeeding day till one takes600 ml on each occasion. The juice diet can be continued for 30 to 40 days without anyill-effects. The patient should take adequate rest during the raw juice therapy.

Raw juices act as a cleansing agent and start eliminating toxins and morbid matter from thesystem immediately. This often results in symptoms such as pain in the abdomen, diarrhoea,loss of weight, headache, fever, weakness, sleeplessness and bad breath.

These reactions,which are part of the cleansing process, should not be suppressed by the use of drugs. They willcease when the body is able to expel all toxins.

After the raw juice therapy, the return to normal balanced diet should be gradual, and in stages.

In the beginning, two juice meals may be replaced by milk and fruits. Then gradually juice mealsmay be substituted by a balanced-diet.

Dr. Price reported that, in a large number of cases, even when root filled teeth which appeared perfectly normal and without symptoms were extracted, a high percentage of the patients who had been experiencing heart problems found their conditions totally or almost totally subsided.

The physicians who understand the harmful role teeth can play in their patient's lives will, I trust, keep in mind that none of this information in any way condones the wholesale condemnation of all teeth. Early in my practice I was horrified to find a number of patients whose physicians took the focal infection theory too literally and advised them to have all their teeth out, teeth that were in no way involved in their arthritic condition.

Because dentists construct dentures which look and act so much like natural teeth, people have come to believe that they are just as good as their own. While dentures are among the best of all body replacement parts, they are never good at masticating food as natural teeth in good repair. Most patients with full dentures are enthused about them and insist they can eat everything.

Then, too, bad this very revealing research of Dr. Price's not been buried, there is a good chance by now we would have solved the problems of how to sterilize bacteria trapped in dentin tubules.

Goldfish Disease One - Ichtyopthirius

More commonly known as Ick, this is the most common goldfish disease that has the potential to kill. Ick is a parasite that attaches to the goldfish body.

Causes: This happens when the undue stress is put on the goldfish due to bad water conditions, fluctuations in the temperature and an overall poor quality of maintenance.

Symptoms: Look for small white spots that look like salt grain on the goldfishs skin, fins and gills.

What happens: This parasite attached to the goldfish when it is stressed out due to bad conditions and feed off the body of the fish. The conditions worsen when the Ick begins to lay its eggs and reproduces at a very fast pace.

Treatment: If your goldfish is a victim of Ick, treat him or her with an anti-parasite medication. Also you might have to raise the water temperature to make this medication more effective. Ask an expert and follow instructions.

How can you prevent this goldfish disease: You can prevent Ick from growing by making sure that you maintain the tank well with the weekly changes and keep the water fresh and pollution-free.

Fin Rot

Our senior dogs are living longer and healthier lives due to better nutrition, owner care and advances in veterinary medicine. However, as our dogs get older, they become subject to a number of age-related canine diseases. What is old for a dog? Probably the best definition is the last 25% of your dogs life. Our aging dogs have been our loving companions for many years and we have learned to appreciate their good, or at least predictable, behavior and calm demeanor. However you recently may have started to notice changes in your dogs appearance, activity level and disposition. In two earlier articles I discussed the symptoms and treatments for the two most common age-related diseases Canine Arthritis and Dog Diabetes. These are two diseases that can be managed if you recognize the symptoms early enough to seek help from your veterinarian. However, there are a number of other diseases that dog owners should be watching for.

As always, when you observe any significant changes in your dogs diet, activity level, temperament and/or weight loss, then consult with your veterinarian. Treatment costs can be expensive and the early purchase of pet health insurance may be a good decision. Some other common age-related diseases such as Deafness, Blindness, Glaucoma, Cataracts, Dental Disease and Cancer are discussed below.

Deafness or hearing loss in older dogs is fairly common. As dogs age their internal hearing structures often start to deteriorate. Behavior changes and symptoms include: continued sleeping when you arrive home, ignoring voice commands, startling easily and even snapping when woken. You will have to adapt and train your pet to recognize hand signals. In order to get your dogs attention, you will have to resort to stamping your feet or flicking a flashlight on and off or even purchasing a remote control vibrating collar. Some attempts have been made to use hearing aids with deaf dogs with poor success as many dogs wont tolerate them.

Cataracts cause some loss of vision and can be inherited or develop with age. Most cataracts develop slowly with age and cause cloudiness in the clear eye lens. If cataracts are allowed to develop, they will eventually cause blindness and become quite difficult to correct. Early symptoms are cloudiness in the clear eye lens and impaired vision resulting in clumsy behavior or cautious movements in unfamiliar locations. If you notice your dog bumping into furniture, then it is time to have your vet examine him for vision problems. Cataracts can be removed but the treatment is quite expensive.

Glaucoma is a very painful disease in which fluid pressure increases inside the eyeball. The tendency to develop glaucoma can be inherited or it can develop in older dogs or dogs with untreated cataracts. Glaucoma can occur very suddenly and needs to be treated immediately to prevent blindness. Symptoms include pawing at a painful eye, excessive tearing, cloudy eye lens, bloodshot eye, enlarged eyeball and tipping of head to one side to try and relieve the pressure. Take your dog to the vet immediately, who, upon diagnosing glaucoma, will prescribe eye drops to be given to your dog several times per day.

Blindness or partial blindness tends to develop more often in elderly dogs as a result of cataracts, glaucoma or more often progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). Unlike the first two causes, there is no cure for PRA, in which the retina progressively deteriorates over time. The tendency for PRA can be inherited and it is why breeders test the breeding parents for the disease before selling their pure-bred puppies. Symptoms include clumsiness, reluctance to go outside at night, moving more cautiously and permanently dilated pupils. Your dog can still have a good quality of life as a blind dog but you will have to adapt to meet his needs. Always keep his food and toys in the same place and dont rearrange furniture. Pick up objects that he may trip over. Expect your dog to always be near you as he will be dependant on you. If your dog has partial sight, then keep the lights on at night so he can find his way around.

Cancer is the major cause of death in senior dogs. Early diagnosis of cancer can result in successful treatment. There are a wide range of symptoms that can alert you to problems that may be caused by cancer. These include: difficulty in eating or swallowing, weight loss, loss of appetite, sores that wont heal, abnormal growths or swellings, and bleeding or discharge from body openings. Your vet will look for external and internal cancerous growths and then do a biopsy. If the growth is cancerous then he may suggest surgery, radiation or chemotherapy. Your veterinarian will discuss the cost and probability of success of the various alternative treatments.

Dental Disease or periodontal disease is very prevalent in middle-aged and older dogs. Just like in people, the bacteria on a dogs teeth turn into plaque and tartar deposits. Unless the plaque is removed, the bacteria can attack the gums and cause pain and inflammation, gum recession and loose teeth. Symptoms include receding gums, bleeding gums, loose teeth and bad breath odor. Your vet can recommend the best treatment. Brushing your dogs teeth needs to be started when they are puppies, otherwise your dog will refuse to tolerate it and you will have to have your vet regularly clean your dogs teeth under anesthetic. A number of products will help control plaque. These include rawhide chews, dental chew toys such as Hercules bones and Greenies. However if the dental disease is advanced then dont give your dog hard chew toys which may result in broken teeth.

Zoonoses is the term applied to a grouping of diseases that are transferable from canine/feline to human. Basically, these diseases fall into three groupings based on their means of transmission. This also groups these, ideally, in the means of treatment and control. The three groupings of diseases are as follows -diseases spread through :1) urine or feces, 2) hair and skin contact, or 3) bites and scratches.

Zoonoses - Spread through Urine or Feces

Hookworms

Hookworms enter the German Shepherd's body in the area that directly comes in contact with the feces-contanimated soil. Seen more commonly in the South, these parasites are unsuited to ideally live in human beings. Traditionally they die after crawling several inches underneath the surface layer of the skin. Inflammation usually occurs as a result of these parasites in humans and causes a condition called creeping eruption which may last several weeks or months depending on its severity.

Leptospirosis

German Shepherd's may come in contact with this disease through swimming, drinking, licking their fur, or by eating food contaminated with animal urine. Many animals may carry this, though rats are most often the culprit.

This zoonoses symptom in humans include flu-like including chills, body aches, vomiting, fever and headache. Sometimes kidney damage may occur or the membranes covering the spinal cord or brain may become inflamed. This disease is not usually fatal though it does make its host miserable for weeks at a time.

Roundworms

If these parasites are swallowed by humans they migrate into the body tissues and may cause damage, including symptoms of fever and liver enlargement which can last up to a year in length including symptoms of fever and liver enlargement which can last up to a year in length.

These parasites are most commonly found in small children (2-4 yrs. of age) who mistakenly swallow the eggs and become infected. Children playing in an area in which an animal has defecated in the past, who do not wash their hands after coming in contact with the eggs and inadvertently sticks their hands into their mouth are the most common receptors of roundworm. Only rarely fatal, the disease is traditionally mild though it may be long lasting.

Tapeworms

Tapeworms can easily be ingested by any German Shepherd who swallows a flea carrying the infected form when biting at or chewing their coat. Children may get it virtually the same way- minus the coat chewing.

Tapeworm infestation in humans this way is actually quite rare when compared to infestation from eating undercooked pork or beef.

Toxoplasmosis

Rarely this may cause death in humans since most people develop a resistance to it during normal exposure. It can cause many types of birth deformities in children born to mothers who have been infected for the first time without having developed an immunity before becoming pregnant. Most commonly this is picked up through contact with infected cat feces or in contact with contaminated soil.

Zoonoses - Prevention of Waste Transmitted Diseases

There are a few basic precautions everyone should take to prevent transmission of any of the above mentioned diseases - zoonoses. First, clean up all pet droppings and wash your hands each time you any come in contact with contaminated soil. It is extremely important to teach children these steps. Also, if your German Shepherd has gone wading or swimming in any water which may have become contaminated with animal urine, bathe it at once when you return home.

Zoonoses - Spread through Skin/Hair Contact

Fleas

Fleas prefer feeding on your German Shepherd though they will not turn up the chance of of making an occasional meal on humans as well.

Ringworm

Most commonly found in children (though anyone may be infected), this disease is caused by a skin/hair eating fungus which first appears on people as a round, red, scaly area. It grows outward in a circular formation and is the most common fungal disease currently reported.

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

Tick borne, this disease or Zoonose can cause symptoms such as fever, chills and headache though it is not usually fatal. Symptoms may last many weeks and it can be treated with antibiotics.

Most commonly this disease is transmitted through the bite of an infected tick. Also, you may become infected while pulling a tick off your German Shepherd. It is best to wear gloves when removing ticks.

Scabies

The less commonly found version of mange (as opposed to the demodetic version), this may still cause intense itching, irritation and thickening of the skin. Animal mange may live in human skin though it cannot reproduce there. Humans have their own version of the scabies mite.

Zoonoses - Prevention of Skin/Hair Contact Diseases

Overall, proper nutritional care and health of your German Shepherd is the best defense against the chance of your dog harboring any of these diseases.

Frequent grooming and herbal repellents are good choices in combating most of these diseases or Zoonoses before they become major. Stress, roaming and contact with other dogs are the three most common points of transmission among the previous diseases.

Wash your hands after dog contact and minimize contact with any infected pet until the problem is cured.

Zoonoses - Diseases Caused by Bites and Scratches

Cat Scratch Fever

Some people will develop a fever, enlarged lymph nodes and malaise near the area of a bite or scratch from a cat a few weeks after the occurrence. Though not fatal it can be very uncomfortable and can be followed by complications. Infected cat bites may become infected with an entirely different bacteria though the symptoms are similar.

Probably best, is to thoroughly wash an area bitten or scratched by a cat and to clean it liberally on a frequent basis to prevent, hopefully, infection.

Rabies

Virtually 100% fatal once the clinical symptoms appear, this disease is carried by a virus transmitted through the saliva of an infected biting animal. Symptoms include frothing at the mouth, extreme behavioral/personality changes and convulsions which usually ends in the aggressive, staggering and bleary- eyed condition.

If you happen upon an animal showing any of these disease symptoms, get away from it as quickly as possible and call your nearest animal control unit. If by chance you are bitten, try to follow it to where it lives (if it is a stray) so that the proper officials may capture it for testing. If you do kill it, do not injure the head as this will be needed for verification. Also, if you are bitten by an animal exhibiting any of the symptoms above, thoroughly wash out the wound as quickly as possible and contact your personal physician immediately. Overall, your chances of getting rabies are rare though you can never be over cautious.

Best advice, keep your dog in tip-top physical condition through exercise and proper nutrition to reduce its chances of picking up any diseases or parasites from less healthy animals. Also, try to minimize your pets contact with wild animals or sick pets.

A zoonotic disease, loosely defined, is a disease that can be transmitted froman animal to a human. These diseases can be transmitted by direct contact, by vectorsor by the consumption of animals and/or animal products.

While many animal diseases are zoonotic, we are going to highlight some of the more common ones caused by worms.

A) Hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum)

These are distributed worldwide and arefound wherever dogs live.

In dogs they can cause anaemia(bloodloss), weight loss, loss of appetite,poor growth,bloody stools, coughing and localised skin inflammation,especially of the feet, legs and abdomen.

In humans they are responsible for a condition known as Cutaneous Larval Migrans. The migration of the larval stages causes localised skin inflammation, especially in the lower leg region

Preventative measures include:

1) Regular removal of dog faeces from the environment and avoiding contactwith dog faeces and soil contaminated with dog faeces.
2) Disinfection of Kennels etc
3) Regular Deworming (pets and people!)
4) Basic Hygiene - washing hands after playing with dogs, before meals etc.

B) Roundworm (Toxocara canis) are also distributed worldwide.

Usually only dogs up to about 8 months old are infected.Symptoms include poor growth, weight loss, pot bellied appearance, coughing, occasional vomiting, slimey diarrhoea with worms sometimes visible.

In humans they are responsible for a condition known as Visceral larval Migrans. The larvae migrate through the body and the symptoms experienced by the person depend on where the larvae end up in the body.Common symptoms include a fever, muscle pains, coughing, lossof appetite, blindness (usually only one eye) etc.

Prevention is the same as for hookworm.

C) Toxoplasmosis

Toxoplasmosis is one of the best known of the zoonotic diseases that involve petsand is the disease that leads many pregnant women to (unfairly) toss the pet catout the door!

Although cats play a major role in the life cycle of Toxopllasma gondii, the causative organism,humans can in fact become infected 3 different ways, only one of which is direct contactwith cat faeces.In fact, cat ownership is not a big factor for human infection with Toxoplasma.

The three ways that humans can become infected:

1) Eating undercooked meat
This is THE major route of infection for humans, NOT contact with cat faeces.In one study , up to 60% of infections were as the result of the consumption of undercookedmeat.

2) Transplacental Infection
The foetus is infected while still in the uterus. This infection is the resultof the mother becoming infected during pregnancy.

3) Ingestion of the organism shed in cat faeces.

Preventative measures thus involve cooking meat properly, wearing gloves when gardening,washing hands and utensils after working with raw meat and cleaning litter trays out daily.

Zoonotic diseases are a real threat to humans, but in most cases a little common sense and basichygiene practices will prevent you becoming infected with any of these diseases.
